Forecast
Armenia is capable of adding problems to its bloodless opponent.
On Saturday, 11 October, Hungary's national team will play at home against Armenia. The teams will compete for second place in Group F. Logically, the first spot goes to Portugal: the favourites have already managed to defeat both Armenia and Hungary.
The Hungarians started very poorly in terms of results. The team suffered a serious psychological blow. In their match against Ireland, they squandered a two-goal lead, resulting in a 2:2 draw. This was followed by a heavy defeat to Portugal. The hosts even led for 15 minutes but ultimately lost 2:3. They conceded a key goal again at the end of the match. Thus, there is no room for error in the match against Armenia – they need to win.
Regarding the squad, the situation is far from optimal: the main goalkeeper, Denesh Dibus, is out. Now they will have to rely on a backup. Their top scorer, Barnabás Varga, is also unavailable due to suspension, as is another forward, Roland Sallai. It's clear that there are always high expectations from Dominik Szoboszlai; however, the Liverpool midfielder is unlikely to single-handedly crush Armenia.
The Armenian national team disappointed in their first match against Portugal – it was a total rout. However, they performed decently against Ireland, winning 2:1. Eduard Spertsyán justified his star status by creating several goal-scoring chances. It was one of Spertsyán’s best matches for the national team. Thanks to this victory, Armenia continues to compete for second place. A draw would be strategically sufficient for them in Hungary, especially since their opponent has not secured any wins.
The Armenian team approaches this match without any serious losses. The main issue for the national team is the weak centre of defence. They have to rely on players from the domestic league. Perhaps defensive midfielder Ugochukwu Iwu can help. The Rubin midfielder is having an outstanding defensive season, leading the league in tackles.
In attack, the traditional hope lies with Grant-Leon Ranos. The naturalised player has scored five goals in 19 matches for Armenia.
Hungary, however, does not have a colossal advantage in class. Additionally, the coaching staff will feel pressure from three absences – new players are needed in the starting lineup. A goalkeeper with no experience in big matches will definitely take the field. Hungary has six players listed for the attack, but only Varga and Sallai have scored for the national team – and they will not be there. This means there are a lot of questions about the lineup. Hungary is rightly considered the favourite in the betting lines, but a coefficient of 1.30 against a strong opponent who has beaten Ireland is excessive. A difficult match is very likely for the hosts. Currently, for Armenia, the only problem is Szoboszlai. If they can contain him, a draw is possible.
