Forecast
Ukrainians should redeem themselves for a defeat in Scotland and pick up three points
For Ukraine, the match against Armenia on 24 September is very important. Previously, Petrakov's team had failed in an away game against Scotland, losing 0-3. No one had an overwhelming advantage in the first half, but after the break, the hosts outplayed the Ukrainians on all counts. The Ukraine national team made a number of defensive mistakes and were punished. As a result, the Ukrainians have lost their top spot in the group, leaving Scotland behind. Now the teams are separated by two points. Ukraine will certainly need to defeat Armenia to regain the top spot, and then take revenge on Scotland. Armenia have a number of bright performers in their squad. Eduard Spertsyan and Khoren Bayramian stand out. However, as a team, Ukraine are of a higher class. Armenia won its only game in the 2022/23 Nations League at home against Ireland 1-0. That was followed by away defeats against Scotland and Ukraine and a 1-4 home defeat by the same Scots. The Armenian team in general is prone to fluctuations. They started the latest World Cup 2022 qualifying cycle with three straight wins: over Liechtenstein, Iceland and Romania, before losing to Romania, 0-5 to northern Macedonia and 1-4 to Germany. The loss to Germany was, of course, to be expected, but the other two results could obviously have been more successful. In Scotland, the Ukrainians looked tired. Petrakov's team had played much weaker than they did during the World Cup 2022 tie in the summer. But now there is no margin for error. Armenia are not as organised defensively as Scotland. It is highly unlikely they will put up such stiff resistance. The Ukraine national team were left without Viktor Kovalenko before the game with Armenia. The player was diagnosed with a torn drive muscle. After the first match against Scotland, the Spetsia player did not fly to Armenia but went straight to Italy where he will continue his recovery. Zinchenko, Shaparenko, Buschan and Sobol were earlier placed in the sickbay. Bookmakers believe Ukraine will beat Armenia. Petrakov's side are likely to confirm their status as favourites. A rout is not inevitable, but the visitors are certain to score at least one goal more than the opposition. We must bet on a win for Ukraine.
