Forecast
Brest and Lille can punish each other for weakening their squads this summer
In the first round match of the French championship, Brest will play at home against Lille. The latter has significantly updated their squad, so there is a need to check the validity of their claims for a place in the European cups, even in the Champions League. Lille has been known in recent years for their well-organised game. However, over the summer they lost several important players, including Jonathan David, Luka Chevalier, Remy Cabella, Diakite, Gomes, and others. On the other hand, there were some interesting signings: from Perraud and Bodart to Brochholm and Giroud. It will be interesting to see the revamped Lille, which, at first glance, seems to be weaker than stronger.
However, the same can be said about Brest. They have signed only four newcomers and parted ways with 12 players. Moreover, the arrivals don't seem to be as strong compared to those the club has lost. It is difficult to say how the coaching staff will cope with these losses. Brest has been known to surprise in recent years, even making it to the Champions League. However, they have not been able to reinvest the dividends into development, and this season, the team will likely regress significantly and assume a mid-table status, if not a relegation battle. Nevertheless, Brest still has some interesting players remaining.
In preparation for the season, Brest suffered a heavy defeat to Nice (0:6) but later overcame Le Havre (1:0) and Napoli (2:1), as well as drew with Sassuolo (1:1). Lille, on the other hand, lost to Como (2:3) and Borussia Dortmund (2:3) but managed to beat Venezia (3:0) and drew with West Ham (1:1), only to lose in a penalty shootout.
