Forecast
We expect goals from both teams in Glasgow
The glorious Rangers found themselves in an unenviable situation after their first match in the third qualifying round of the Champions League. The Scottish club got a real dark horse in the face of Union St Gillois and Van Bronckhorst's side failed to overcome the first part of the challenge. The match at the Den Dref stadium was played with a slight visual advantage for Rangers, but the home side were more cheeky, scoring a goal in each half and coming away with a 2-0 win. In a highly successful move, the Belgian side made their first start in the European cups since the 1964/1965 season.
Last season, Union St-Gillois made their return to the Belgian top flight. The team immediately sensationally won the main tournament, but still lost in the championship grid to Brugge. Second place in the season gave the club the opportunity to make their Champions League debut. In the offseason, Union did not make any noise on the transfer market, but they adapted their preparation to the major European competition. In this regard, along with their success in the first leg against Rangers, the team lost Saturday's league game to Mechelen 0-3. Undoubtedly, the Belgians will come to Glasgow fully equipped, so it is unlikely that league failures will matter even the slightest.
Rangers also finished second in the Scottish league last season, losing to Celtic. In the off-season, the vice-champions lost Calvin Bussey and Joe Aribo to Ajax and Southampton respectively. Van Bronckhorst's side have started the current league season with two wins over mediocre opponents, but have lost their most important game of the season so far in Belgium. Interestingly, Rangers have played seven friendlies in July and August, only managing to keep their goals locked up in the last contest.
Of course, the home side will push on in the return leg and can count on scoring goals. However, the visitors have already proved on the domestic scene that they are creative and sharp in attacking formations. We'll bet on goals from both teams.
