Forecast
Liverpool will convincingly take their revenge on home turf.
Last week proved extremely challenging for English football as a whole, which stepped into the Champions League Round of 16 with six 'bayonets' in its lineup. Three of them were knocked out in a dramatic fashion by three-goal defeats, the fourth was a bit dented. In the latter case the reference is to Liverpool, who this season have now lost in Istanbul for the second time. What is especially interesting is that both Galatasaray’s away trips ended 1-0 in favor of the Turkish champions, and the decisive goals were scored early in the matches by Victor Osimhen and Mario Lemina. Last week the goal came already in the seventh minute. Overall, one cannot say that the match was dictated by one of the opponents, but Galatasaray did have somewhat sharper moments. There was no final onslaught from Liverpool either. Arne Slot’s team surrendered rather pragmatically, having a clear plan to avenge themselves at Anfield. Undoubtedly, the coaching staff and players of the Merseyside club know the difference between Galatasaray in Turkey and Galatasaray on the road. This was demonstrated in the previous round of the Champions League by Juventus, who lost in Istanbul 2-5, and in Turin avenged themselves 3-0, playing from the 48th minute with a man down, but ultimately lost to the Turkish champions in extra time. Bookmakers have set the home side as favorites for the upcoming tie, offering odds of 1.28 on their victory. Liverpool showed their focus on the return leg with Galatasaray on Sunday, when at their home ground they let Tottenham take a draw. Slot’s side scored in the middle of the first half and, instead of widening the margin, with a one-goal lead dragged it to the 90th minute, at which they conceded a goal — 1:1. Losses by Aston Villa and Chelsea in parallel matches somewhat improved the Reds’ mood, but on Wednesday they cannot afford another slip. Galatasaray beats all opponents on the domestic stage, but in the Champions League they have lost all three of their last away trips, where their opponents were Monaco, Manchester City and Juventus. Most likely, Liverpool will not let their fans down and will decide the qualification for the Champions League quarterfinals in regular time.
