Bayern Munich and Dortmund dropped points in the previous round, leaving Freiburg top of the table. How long will the club hold on to first place? We analyse the fixtures in the sixth round and make our Bundesliga predictions and betting selections.

The previous matchday in the German league produced several surprises. The biggest came in Augsburg, where Bayern Munich managed to take just one point. The Munich club's star players simply could not cope with a schedule in which a three-week break for international matches gave way to an intensive programme of club football. Including European competitions, that programme will consist of two matches a week. Dortmund suffered a similar setback, failing to beat Werder Bremen at home. The sixth round of Bundesliga fixtures is scheduled for 16–18 October, and these are the matches for which we will make our predictions.

League standings

Ambitious Freiburg have replaced Dortmund at the top of the table. Last season's Europa League finalists have no more points than Dortmund, but have a better goal difference. Following two draws in five rounds, Bayern Munich have fallen two points behind those teams. Those who enjoy an upset will be pleased to see Elversberg in mid-table. At the bottom, Borussia M continue to shock their supporters, having yet to earn a single point. Hoffenheim and Eintracht are also experiencing serious problems, with three and five points respectively after five matches.

Bookmakers' long-term expectations

Despite dropping from second to third, Bayern Munich remain in a strong position, and bookmakers are not concerned. The Munich club remain the leading contenders for the league title. Before the sixth round, the odds are: Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga – 1.12. A title win for any of the other seventeen Bundesliga clubs would bring a considerably larger return: any club other than Bayern Munich to win the Bundesliga – 6.26. Dortmund's first slip-up in the league has not affected their place among the favourites, but their odds have risen from 10.0 to 10.5. Leverkusen and RB Leipzig are given slim chances of finishing top – 20.0 and 25.0 respectively. Stuttgart and Freiburg winning the title would return 100 and 150 times the stake respectively.

Bundesliga bets

Bayern Munich - RB Leipzig

Almost the entire German champions' squad went away during the three-week break for international matches. Star players Harry Kane, Michael Olise and others returned to the club just a couple of days before the away match against Augsburg. Some imbalance within the Bayern Munich squad resulted in a draw against a mid-table side. Two slip-ups in five rounds are too many for the champions. With that in mind, Kompany's team will be far better prepared for the match against RB Leipzig. The standing of their opponents also demands it. The visitors have lost their last four matches in Munich by margins ranging from two to six goals. They will not escape the same fate on 17 October: Asian handicap Bayern Munich -1.5 – 1.55.

Schalke 04 - Mainz 05

Schalke 04's long-awaited return to the Bundesliga has been marked by a fairly modest start to the season. The Gelsenkirchen club undoubtedly still need to grow stronger before setting more ambitious targets in Germany's top flight. Something Miron Muslic's players can genuinely be proud of happened in early September, when Bayern Munich failed to leave Gelsenkirchen with a win (0:0). However, the roles will be different against Mainz 05. Against these strong visitors, the home supporters will not allow their team to settle for sitting back in defence. Mainz 05 themselves have won both away matches in the current league campaign and will be happy to take a third: Mainz 05 draw no bet – 1.70.

Looking for an upset

Elversberg - Augsburg

The newcomers to Germany's top football league have shown real character in the opening part of the season. As well as beating Leverkusen and Borussia M, Elversberg made life difficult for Bayern Munich, who secured victory through a Kane goal midway through the second half. There are no routine or easy Bundesliga matches for the hosts, and so far they have approached every round as though everything were at stake. Augsburg took points off Bayern Munich in their previous match and will visit the newcomers with three points in mind. However, beating the division's surprise package on their own ground may prove almost harder than earning a draw against Bayern Munich: Asian handicap Elversberg -1 – 3.60.

Bundesliga predictions in one line

Eintracht - Cologne: 1:2 (Cologne draw no bet – 2.60).

Hamburg - Stuttgart: 1:1 (Double chance 1X (Hamburg or draw) – 1.97).

Union Berlin – Dortmund: 2:2 (Over 3 goals – 1.77).

Werder Bremen - Paderborn: 1:1 (Double chance X2 (Paderborn or draw) – 2.06).

Leverkusen - Freiburg: 3:1 (Leverkusen to win – 1.73).

Borussia M - Hoffenheim: 0:1 (Hoffenheim to win – 2.08).

Reviews of other tournaments, leagues and sports can be found in the dedicated section of our website.
