Forecast
Scotland may well surprise in the second round
On Wednesday, 19 June, the matches of the second round in Group A will take place. Scotland will face Switzerland. The odds on the Brits have gone down after a surprisingly poor performance against Germany.
Scotland were initially considered the outsiders of the quartet, but still, such a global failure was not predicted. The team managed to concede five goals against Germany. This is the worst start in the history of the European Championship, if we take into account the opening games. Another important point is the complete emptiness in attack. Steve Clarke's wards managed to create 0 xG. That is an anti-record that cannot be worsened. The only goal happened thanks to an unfortunate action of Rüdiger.
The Dutch have not shown a high-level game for more than a year. Previously, the team lost in friendly matches to the Netherlands (0:4), even managed to stay out of favour in a meeting with Northern Ireland (0:1). The national team does not have a prolific striker, and the standard defensive scheme does not work either.
Another issue is that Germany is still too strong. They are one of the tournament favourites, and even on their own field. It is worth discounting the emotional pressure. In the second round, the Scots may well calm down and at least "dry out" their opponents.
Murat Yakin's Switzerland pleasantly surprised with a well-organised and disciplined game. The team controlled a very dangerous Hungary for most of the match. The Swiss have no big stars in their line-up. So far they are taking their lead through teamwork. They are very good at pressing and have a solid ball control system.
Prior to the tournament, Switzerland had a clear dynamic for a lower total. "Cheeseheads" on the distance of seven matches had only one top match, but against Hungary and did not close. And the class to control the meetings at the score of 1:0 is still not enough. In this regard, the Hungarians managed to regain the intrigue.
The odds are down on Switzerland, but the standings are very important. There is little point for Yakin's team to play for a win, as a draw guarantees a play-off. A peace for Scotland also leaves the door open - they just need to beat Hungary in the third round.
The teams have played each other only once before - in 2006 (Switzerland won 3-1). A cautious scenario is very likely in the second round. Scotland should calm down and this time play in defence without gross errors, because the second opponents are not close to the level of Germany. Switzerland will not force things either. It is important that no one will take risks with a draw at the end of the second half. There is no tournament sense in this.
